Character Appreciation Post #6

Full Name: Evan Carter

Book: Sex & Violence

Sex & Violence

Author: Carrie Mesrobian

Background:  Evan is a tortured guy. He got beat up really bad in the showers at his old private school, and now he’s recovering from the aftermath in a rural cabin on a lake with his distant father. Evan is a guy who likes sex, who likes girls, and constantly struggles with his own confidence and insecurity. I kind of fell in love with Evan, all parts of Evan, throughout the book. I learned about his good sides and the bad things about him, and I ended up really liking all of it.

Qualities: A player? A lover. A slut? A boyfriend. A man? A typical guy. Crazy? Tortured. Evan is funny, he is brave, and he is terrified. He makes bad decisions, and good ones. He’s messed up, and he has messed up friends, and messed up issues. And he knows it. Evan knows what’s wrong with his life, and he knows what he needs to fix. And he knows that it’s really, really hard. He’s a real guy. Take it or leave it.

Quotes:

“God I feel like a fucking asshole sometimes. All the time, really.”

Character Appreciation Posts are a blog meme thought up by Batool at Batool’s Book Feels. I loved the idea so much, that I just had to join in.  I’ll try to do a weekly CAP on Fridays from here on out, so if you like the idea go ahead and join in and post about your favorite book characters!

  1. Evan is one of my favorite characters in recent years. His arc is honest and touching, and at no time feels forced. I’ve given a number of copies of SEX AND VIOLENCE to teens and adults and each time I ask them to think about how he has changed from the beginning to the end. I’m so glad Carrie decided to tell the story from his POV.

    • I totally agree! He is really so honest and vulnerable. It’s so important for readers to realize what he’s going through and to see how it changes him, just like you said. Have you read her newest book, Perfectly Good White Boy? Also amazing!
      Thanks for stopping by!
